Virgin and Child - Sculpture
Virgin and Child
Artist unknown (Central or South American, c. 19th century) Crowned Virgin and Christ Child. Wood with original polychromy. This type of primitive, rural sculpture is known as a "Santos Figure"; they were carved by local artisans to adorn churches and shrines throughout Latin America, and often are charactistically brightly coloured, such as this example. Most of the examples available come from Mexico, but this is a more unusual form from farther south.
