View of the Tomb of Gaius Cestius
Giovanni Battista Piranesi
Veduta del Sepolcro di Cajo Cestio (View of the Tomb of Gaius Cestius)
Engraving on paper, c. 1753
Piranesi is known for his many copperplate engravings showing views of Rome. It is unusual to find images of pyramids among other ancient Roman architecture.
The Pyramid of Cestius was built c. 18-12 BCE. It is thought that Cestius might have been involved in military campaigns in Egypt and Nubia where he was inspired by the architecture there.
