The Temptation of St. Anthony
Oil on panel, c. mid-17th century
This diminutive work depicts the story of St. Anthony the Great, who was said to have experienced temptation and torment while in the Egyptian desert, as told in the hagiography written by Athanasius of Alexandria in the 4th century CE. St. Anthony was subsequently celebrated as a model of aesceticism who continuously engaged in spiritual pursuits despite being tormented by demonic powers, such as those that Teniers imaginitively depicts here.
