An artist-signed Meiji-period Prowling Tiger. Bronze on a custom wooden base, Japanese, c. 1868-1911.
The late 19th century is considered a period of rebirth for Japanese bronzes as well as other art forms. Artists created both decorative objects such as vases as well as highly lifelike animal sculptures such as this tiger, complete with its delicately modeled face and textured stripes.
