Educated at the Royal Swedish Academy of the Arts, Björk studied under many of the Scandinavian masters of the late 19th century. He travelled widely on the Continent during the winters, painting what he found along the way, and he exhibited throughout Europe as a successful artist of his time. Björk is known primarily for his genre scenes as well as his intimate portraits such as this.
