Dalou first exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1861 and was a friend of Rodin, another famous sculptor. He is also known for taking part in the disasterous Paris Commune of 1871. He lived in exile in England for a few years, returning in 1879 after receiving amnesty. Dalou went on to win the Medal of Honour at the Salon of 1883, among others, and has works in numerous public and private monuments around London and Paris.
