Ortellius Maps of Calais & Vermandois
Two Renaissance-period Maps, together on a single folio, entitled "Caletensium... [Calais]" and "Veromandorum... [Vermandois]". Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper, published by Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) in his famous atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp: 1579 edition.
The left map depicts the coastline around Calais, and is based upon an older map by Nicholas de Nicolay. The right map depicts the Vermandois region around Saint-Quentin, and is based upon the work Jean de Surhon, who mapped the region in 1557 for the King of France.
