A Renaissance-period Map of North Africa, entitled “Barbariae et Biledulgerid, Nova Descriptio [The Barbary States and Biledulgerid, a new description]”. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper, published by Abraham Ortelius (1527-1598) in his famous atlas, Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Antwerp: 1574 edition.
This map depicts the Canary Islands and the Maghreb from Morocco all the way to Libya, with the Sahara Desert in the south, as well as the western Mediterranean sea with the southern European coastline.
