Komai Miniature Damascene Box
A Meiji-period Miniature "Damascene" Box by Komai of Kyoto (engraved on base with 9-character signature and dragonfly), richly decorated with pheasants on the lid and various traditional motifs around the sides, and simply engraved with butterflies and birds on the interior. Gold and silver with bronze inlay, Japanese, c. 1868-1912.
A suppllier of fine metalwork to the Imperial Court, the workshop of the Komai family is considered to have produced the finest damascene pieces of the period. They used multiple different signatures depending on the piece; the dragonfly is said to be used only on important pieces.
