Empire Dutch Marquetry Pier Mirror
An Empire-period Pier Mirror decorated with Dutch marquetry and parquetry, as well as carved decoration highlighted with ebonizing and gilding, including a frieze of Diana (Goddess of the hunt) with one of her dogs. The crown is supported by columns of baluster shape, which are carved fully in the round. There is a coat of arms both on the crown and the dado. Dutch, c. early 19th century.
This mirror is an unusual melding of the simple lines and classical motifs of the Empire and Biedermeier styles with the more exhuberant marquetry decoration traditional to the Netherlands.
