Allegories of the Four Continents
Hand-painted porcelain
German, c. 19th century

These allegorical figures represent the continents as understood in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Each figure is posed with a representative animal: a camel (Asia), a lion (Africa), an alligator (the Americas), and a horse (Europe).

Such groupings were first created by Meissen in the mid-18th century when exploration was still in its heyday. Originally these allegories were just figures, but later artists began creating more elaborate schemes such as these figures, complete with animals.
